Some words on DVD replication and duplication.
The terms "replication" and "duplication" are often confused when choosing how to make DVD copies. Duplicated discs are writable blanks and copies are made in a process similar to using a home computer. They can be made in any amount, but orders usually range from one to one thousand copies. The turnover can be as fast as one day. A duplicated DVD-R disc will play back in most new DVD decks and computers, but is not as reliable or compatible as a replicated disc.
Replicated discs are injection-molded from scratch in multi-million dollar replicators. Replicated discs are considered more reliable and "retail-ready" than duplicated ones. But, due to the cost of the process, replication orders generally require that a minimum of one thousand DVDs be made. The production of replicated DVD discs also takes longer. A replicated disc will play back in all players and is generally recommended for these large quantity orders.
In general, the advantages of duplication over replication are that the process can be completed quickly and in smaller quantities. A duplicated DVD-R disc has a printable surface for custom artwork and doesn't require the time or complicated silk screen process that a replicated disc does. While replicated discs produce better overall quality and have excellent playback compatibility, the expense of the project is greater.
